Castle Charm

With an area of 1,010.4 square km, the biggest town of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia, Akhaltsikhe, means ‘New Castle.’ Akhaltsikhe’s historical significance is exemplified by the imposing Akhaltsikhe Fortress, also known as Rabati Castle. The castle dominates the town from the north side.

This 12th-century stronghold has witnessed the rise and fall of various empires, resulting in a captivating architectural fusion of Georgian, Turkish, and Russian influences. Recently restored to its former glory, the fortress now offers a glimpse into the town’s storied past and houses a museum, mosques, churches, and beautifully landscaped gardens.

Akhaltsikhe is home to a medley of ethnic groups, including Georgians, Armenians, and Azerbaijanis, all coexisting harmoniously and enriching the local culture. This diversity is reflected in the town’s religious sites, such as Georgian Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic churches, which stand as symbols of this cultural tapestry.
