With an area of 1,010.4 square km, the biggest town of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia, Akhaltsikhe, means ‘New Castle.’ Akhaltsikhe’s historical significance is exemplified by the imposing Akhaltsikhe Fortress, also known as Rabati Castle. The castle dominates the town from the north side.
